  1. dial 011 to get out of the country, then 1, then the area code, then the phone number.

  2. Calling a cell phone from the US is the same as calling a land line.  You would dial 1+area code+cell phone number.  You do not need to dial 011 as Canada and US systems do not require this. Note that occasionally cell phones may have area codes other than those indicated for land lines.  You can always try the website for the cell phone provider to see if area codes for that city are indicated.  If you have the cell phone number and it does not work then either the number is incorrect or the person you are calling is in an area with no service at present, has had their service discontinued, or has their cell turned off.

  3. Helen Scott is wrong.  You don't need to dial 011 before dialing the number.  Just dial 1-area code- seven digit #

  4. If the person is from your area normally then just dial their number.  The system should route the call to where they are.

If that fails, try adding 1 and then your area code to the 7 digit number and go from there.

If that fails then they probably have the phone turned off.

If their number is from Canada somewhere then you need to know their normal area code and use that with 1-area code.

Dialing "up here" is the same as where you are.  It's always 1 for long distance, the area code and number for the phone service.

  5. First dial 1 then the area code (for example dial 416 if it's Toronto) and finally the phone number of the person you're calling
