How does one call those structures (they resemble Hershey's Kisses) on top of Orthodox cathedrals?

  1. domes or Cooplas. They are basicly a Russian design and are found on any Russian orthodox church or Russian inspired Church and not just cathedrals. The reason for the shape is becuse it will stand against the weight of snow better than a normal dome.  

    The Russian styles of domes are onion and helmet domes.

    The onnion domes are almost spherical while the helmet domes are a little bit more of a standard hemispher with the point on top.

    Other Orthodox- Greek Serbian what have you will use regular domes since their winters are no place as long and cold as the Russian winter
