Question:

How do you cancel an AOL account?

I called and canceled my account in Jan. this year and then just got a bill for $72 saying I'm overdue and they're taking my account to collections.

I've heard about AOL and how difficult it can be to close off an account, but how do I take action on this one?

  1. yes AOL is infamous for not honoring peoples request to cancel. It all began when AOL was taken of by Turner Network which is owned by Ted Turner.   I literally argued with the Customer rep for 20 minutes and after becoming so angered at the fact the Customer rep seemed to be amused at the fact that she was causing me so much frustration. I would flatly demand that my  account be can-celled yet she insisted that she would give me a 30 day credit for free but I was in the Army and I was going to Iraq and I wanted to cancel it that way I wouldn't be charged while overseas and she even suggested I could use AOL in Iraq.I told her I don't need AOL because the barracks have Internet. Log story short She read me a disclosure statement that she said had to be read aloud in order to verify I understand the agreement terms concerning my desire to cancel my account in order for my account to be canceled . It read it for 10 minutes after about 60 seconds I interrupted while she attempted to speak over me almost ignoring me I then asked her if it were really necessary to overwhelm me with so much technical mambo jumbo. I told here I know what happens to me when I cancel the account when the account is can celled then I don't pay for it anymore!! SO I demanded that she give me my conformation number right that moment so I could end the dreadful conversation. She prom ply refused and proceeded to read the disclosure statement as she called it and finally I get the confirmation code.and she informs me the account is canceled and I wont be charged any longer. .....3months later my bank account is charged over 60$!! I called back and gave them the confirmation code and the Customer rep says the number doesn't match to any of there records!! I ended up Calling the Better Business Beuro and reported AOL for fraudulent Bank account charges and deceptive practices. 3 weeks later AOL calls me back and says they made a mistake and that I don't owe 70 dollars instead I only owe them 1 months worth which was around 25 dollars I ended up paying it to keep it off my credit but after paying the fee I still got 1 month of default on my credit report.        BOYCOTT  AMERICA ON LINE!    YOUR LOCAL CABLE TV OR PHONE COMPANY WILL PROVIDE HIGH SPEED INTERNET AT MUCH CHEAPER PRICES AND THERE EMPLOYEES ARE MOSTLY APART OF YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY!
