Beginning turns are usually called S-Turns (for Skidded Turns) - these involve a controlled skid where the back of the board slips down the hill as you start and end the turn. This skid helps slow you down. Look at the snow when you make a turn - if the trail you leave is wider than the board then you are doing skidded turns. When you can link these together they are called linked turns and this is how most people ride until they are REALLY good. Just practice in both directions and try making quicker turns.

Carving is different because the board doesn't skid down the hill at any point during the turn - it is on its edge and the back of the edge tracks through the same line in the snow that the front edge makes. Look at someone who is carving - they will be leaning over a LOT more (maybe draging their hand in the snow) and the track left in the snow is a thin line. This requires more pressure on the edge, leaning more into the turn, and bending your knees more.

carving is just a way to maintain control and speed of your board. what you want to do is start to go into a stopping motion but not completely perpendicular. your board should be kinda at a diagonal to the slope. then try to turn the opposite direction and do the exact same thing but the other direction. then just start over and go the other way. lather rinse and repeat
