  1. I would say, your fishing reel  should be of very good quality, say at least 8 ball-bearings and a very smooth drag system.

So a combination of a long rod (e.g. 6'6'' - 7'0''), with good power and fast action AND a good reel. The line weight depend on the rod and reel requirements. Normally a line size of 0.16 - 0.18 is appropriate (Europe).

  2. if you dont want to use any weights, then get a 7-10ft pole. make sure it has good action.

  3. Use a lighter action rod preferably with light action or ultra light action and light line test.

  4. depending on how light your "light" is, use lighter line and a light or ultra light rod.

for those small lures, i use an ultra light setup with no more than 4-lb. line.

I'm a Shimano person so I would recommend a Shimano Sahara 750FB as part of  a light or ultralight setup.

Personally, I dont agree with Alessandro. Ball bearings and a good drag system have nothing to do with casting n a spinning reel.

  5. I assume you're talking about lures of 1/8 ounce or less, casting for trout or panfish. Use a small open-face spinning reel and light line. A longer rod will help a bit, but for 2-4 pound line I wouldn't feel comfortable with a rod longer than 7 feet. Make sure the reel is full (to within about 1/8 of an inch of the rim of the spool).

Then after that, it's timing your swing and release as you cast.

Ball bearings don't affect casting distance with spinning reels, since nothing on the reel moves when you're casting.

  6. I agree with all of these replys but it is not totaly necessary to  buy high dollar reels to do it. I use a medium action rod on a large spooled spincast reel which reduces  the amount of times the line has to spin to come out of the spool. It also reduces line twist which can hurt your castability as well as cause birdnests in your line when casting.  Try one of the superbraid lines. I use P-line spectrex in 10 LB Test which is about the same diameter as 4 LB Monofilament

If you're looking to not spend a lot, check out the Shakespear Infinity reel at about 25 bucks. if you got the bucks check out a Team Diawa Advantage. Both of these can be scoped out at www.Cabelas.com  or www.bassproshops.com

  7. I completely agree with Mr. Trouty. Light line and a quality reel is the way to go. I prefer ultralight or light action gear when using light spinners, but it's not totally necessary. Light line is! I sometimes use my medium action gear when bass fishing with rooster tails, but light line is the key.
