Im going fishing at a high mountain lake. High enough that this lake actually has a rare but beautiful fish called Golden Trout. I reallly really want to catch one - or several - and taste one as well. Since they are picky and I can spin or fly fish (wet or dry). I need some suggestions about the best way to catch these rare fish. Any ideas?

  1. Firstly are you sure its golden trout? could it not be brown trout, they are picky about what they eat, goldens don't really care, a little like rainbows, where they will take spinners and flies, if it is golden i would go for fly fishing that way it will also have the added bonus of the increased chance of getting brown trout, which are common in high altitude mountain lakes, dry flies will take golden trout, flies such as the parachute fly-works well on rivers too, various nymphs would be my method, the old favorites like the PTN, Hares ear, GRHE also blood worm imitations work very well for catching trout fished slowly on a floating line, a fly rod will eb lighter to carry than a spinning rod but take some spinners and a spinning rod is possible too, mepps spinners will cover allot of water and increase your chance of catching plus they are easy to use too, in that they need no rig set up. Also take some woolly bugger flies with you, gold head versions work well, in black and also olive, if you have problems catching use a fluorocarbon leader.

You may also want to try floam back ant imitations if there is a light breeze and you are fishing near trees.

  2. Relative to other trout species, golden trout in wilderness waters are not finicky diners.

Depending on fishing conditions, a dry fly would be an enjoyable and entertaining method.  Or go with your favorite approach.  Whichever you choose, use stealth.

  3. the guys are both right and I can only add a few patterns I use and have been successful with. I like ant larvae I dig up an ant hill and find them and carry them in a little s***w top bottle (get fresh ones every 1/2 day) also I like the small black and or red ant floating flies (use whichever color you have been walking over getting to the stream) also when he said be stealth that means stay low maybe even fish over scrub brush from on your knees four or five feet back away from the waters edge and keep out of the fishes ability to see movement in their horizon if possible stand behind (upto and even holding onto, kind of hugging) linesiding trees. That's it mate.  tight lines

  4. Oh, I know how golden trout can be hard to catch. (Ever since I caught one.) You'll need to be prepared to be pulled away. And if your in a boat, try to push your weight  on the opposite side of the pull so you don't fall. Also, don't forget to use the fishing rod in the same pattern in catching trout: Tug, reel, pull. That's a way to be succesfull in fishing.
