Question:

How do you catch a miniature pinscher that doesn't want to be caught because it's scared?

This little dog showed up in our neighborhood about a week ago and you could tell she had recently had pups. I feel so sorry for her. We live near a busy street and the dog has almost gotten hit several times. Animal control can't catch it either. It basically hangs around the bus stop, sleeps behind the bus stop enclosure. When anybody approaches it runs and sometimes into the street. I have gotten in the street before to yelled at fast drivers to stop or slow down and saved the dogs life about 3 times already. Several people have have tried to catch her but she is very small and fast and she will growl out of fear. Any suggestions so that she doesn't get hit by a car?

  1. put down dog food, when you can get close enough while it is eating, throw a sheet over it and grab it up.  that is how the APL catches stray cats etc. only they use a large net they throw over them.  I think a sheet would work cuz he would get all tangled in it.

  2. AWSOME!!!! keep an eye on her but don't try and grab her it sounds like she was abused

    I adopted my dog and she was like that @ first ...try sitting very still on the ground or you porch bring food;

lunch meat and stuff she would really want, throw it in front of you and wait for a long time ...if she comes don't move or try to reach out to her

if she was abused then any human touch to her is bad

if she comes and eats what you give her awsome!

but if not just leave it somewhere around your house and then come back to it in the morning if it's gone you know she or something else ate it...  do this for like a week and she'll start to expect that food and always come back...after you see her eat the food  for the first time be silent but after a few times  talk to her in a calm sothing voice just so she gets used to you

then eventually put the treats closer and closer to you then eventually try to get her to eat out of your hand  these things can take months but don't give up because if you win over her heart she'll love you forever...trust me my dog does =)

what your doing is awesome if you need more ideas E-mail me ok?

Oh god!! I just read the other answers not a trap!!!! these scare the heck out of abused dogs!!! my dog HATES them when you try to put her in a cage she's a complete different dog please don't do this

you can't cage an abused dog because they freak out!

try simple methods she can't take that much change all at once

    hope this helps =)

  3. You could throw a blanket on her & grab hold of her while she is still under the blanket.  The blanket will serve as protection from her teeth.

You can also take a couple pieces of clothing that you have worn a while so that it has your sent on it.  Leave food by it.  This will give her a chance to smell you with out fear & leaving the food will associate you & food together.

As mentioned above,  you can rent a small animal trap from Animal Control & trap her.  But, if she has babies that she needs to take care of they may die with out her.

You are caught between the Devil & the deep blue sea.  Damned if you do & damned if you don't.

I have taken a week to catch one dog, once.  Leaving garments of clothing & food.  But I got him.

Good luck,  she does need some help.  Bless her heart.  Also provide water just in case she doesn't have access to any.

  4. Yep.  Ask Animal Control if you can borrow a live-trap the right size for her.  If they don't have one, often farm & garden stores carry them or feed stores.  Call around and ask.  Bait it with the smelliest canned dog food you can find and set it up in a quiet area near where she frequents.  If she's hungry, she'll investigate and be trapped.  Another option is to leave your front door open for a while when she's nearby, go where she can't see you outside, but you can see the door and wait and see if she comes in.  If she's used to being a house dog, it's likely the open house door will be a big temptation.  If she does go in, you can close the door behind her and she'd be in an enclosed area and easy to get ahold of. Sitting on the ground yourself with a trail of food leading to you can also work, if you move slowly and don't immediately grab for her.  If you can get her eating out of your hand and comfortable, you may be able to get hold of her, especially if she has a collar on.   Good luck, I hope you can catch her!

  5. I had a min pin who was terrified of anyone but me.  The bottom line is if she doesn't want caught, she won't be.  Your best bet is to keep an eye out on her.  If you live near by, try to leave out food and earn her trust.  You could use a humane trap, but if she's had puppies, you really don't want to remove her, her pups will die without her.  Leave her in the environment that she has chosen so that she can care for her litter.  You're a good person for taking care of her, little babes like that need a helping hand.  You can earn her trust, it just takes time and patience.  Good luck and god bless for taking the time to care.

  6. take a shower with unscented soap, go hide in a bush and put food in front of the bush so when it comes to eat it, you net it, then put it in a kennel.

  7. Animal control are the experts, so if they can't catch this poor dog, it's going to be really hard.

Has anyone tried tempting her with really, really good food?  It would have to be something that smells really good to her - meat.  She's got to be starving.  And no one's going to be able to catch her - she's terrified.  Someone will have to find the patience to sit down with the food where you know she hangs out and coax her to come for the food, then risk getting bitten putting a leash around her neck.  The only way to get her is to gain her trust and get her to come to you.

  8. Mini pincers are small, so you could try one of those humane rodent traps that are used for raccoons and possums. Put something appetizing in there for her and she may take the bait. Only suggestion I have.

  9. If she recently had pups she might still be looking after them in which case be careful not to take her away from them too soon.

The only things I can suggest are get a humane trap, and try and trap her with that.

Or Feed her everyday, usually a way to a dogs heart is through their bellys, if you put food down and stay close enough she can see you but quite far so she feels safe then gradually move closer, then she should hopefully learn that you are a source of food, and do not want to harm her,

Poor little thing I really hope she gets safety soon.
