Question:

How do you catch a pet rat?

So, last night my pet rat opened her cage and got loose. I need some possible solutions to catching her. I was thinking of a live animal trap, like when you need to catch a squirrel or something, but I'm not sure that will work. So, any other suggestions would be great. And please don't leave stupid stuff like, why would you want a pet rat anyways. Thanks.

  1. when you see her just grab her. or you can put out a pile of food along with water in a spot and watch for her to come. thats wat i did with my mouse. it worked haha.

    good luck!

  2. Do you know where she is, or is she completely lost?  If you have an idea as to where she is, get some smelly food (peanut butter or ice cream) and put it in her dish and put her dish.  Turn off the lights and make little noise and wait to see if she comes out.  If she does, you can grab her and put her back.

If you don't know where she is, you're better off leaving her cage open and put the smelly food in there.  Most rats know where their home is and will eventually go back in, especially if it's got tasty food inside. :D

As a side note, if you only have one rat, you should really consider adopting a second.  Rats are highly sociable creatures and need a friend to really be psychologically healthy.  Even if you can play with her a lot, you still are going to be at work/school and sleeping part of the day.

If you decide to do that, check out your local humane society for another female rat.  When animal shelters get rats, it can be months before they get adopted.  The price is very similar to pet stores, but the money you spend will go towards helping other animals instead of to a large corporation.  Additionally you'll be saving a wee girl!

Here's a site on how to introduce rats: http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/...

    Hope that helps!

  3. Get a bucket then put an animal ladder up to the top of it and inside put a million veggies, fruits, treats etc so when they smell it they crawl up the ladder and since there sight isnt very well they almost jump in to get the treats but since there is not ladder comming out they are stuck in there (putting a trail of treats leading to the ladder helps too)

    hoep i helped

  4. Get some treats and call their name. Search the house too in her favorite places.

  5. okay this works all the time !

put some paper bags around your house and put some treats in it and you will hear your pet rat walk in to the paper bag and make a noes !!

makes sure there are no other animals in the house and tell every one to keep a look out!

  6. just leave her to it....put a bowl of food out where she can get to it.

she will come out when she is ready..best thing is to ignore her and you will find she will come to you. when she does tell praise her for coming to you..give her a cuddle and put her back in her cage.

  7. My friend's hamster was in the exact situation as you are in now. Her hamster broke open the cage door. She called me in a panic and told me that Furry (her hamster) was missing, and what I told her to do was: Since you don't know where it's hiding, just put the cage on the floor, open the cage door, and leave a trail of its favourite snacks on the floor. Then after a few days it should be back. Furry was found soon according to my plan! So try it! And there's nothing wrong with having a rat as a pet! :)

  8. use a rat trap (which captures rats alive and not the snap one which kills them) and leave her cage open maybe she goes back inside. If she's tame you could also try seeing where she's hiding and fishing her out by hand
