Question:

How do you catch them?

My work has been off on our registers and we are off by 200 dollars this week. We will implement a camera system but our boss has pretty much told everyone. Is there any other way to find out the person who they think is stealing from us?

  1. Have user names and passwords for whoever uses the registers. Whoever is assigned to the register, is the only person allowed on the register. That way, you'll be able to see who is taking the money by which drawer is short.

  2. Is each employee assigned their own register drawer or does everyone share a common drawer?  It sounds like there's no individual accountability and that's probably the only way you're going to catch the thief.

Besides the cameras, which might not see someone stealing if they're careful, you need to have individual accountability on the cash register drawers.  Each person starts the day with a set amount in the drawer, and at the end of the day, they prepare a cash worksheet which lists all the money in the drawer, by denomination, put the money into a cash bag, then the manager or whoever puts that into the safe until the money is counted that night or the next morning.

You also need to close out your registers each day, so you know what the cash/checks received should be, and what days are coming up short.  It sounds as if you're only closing out the registers once a week, and that again leads to a lack of accountability.

My wife worked in a store that had cameras over the registers, and they had one girl who was stealing up to $100 a day, and even with the cameras, they couldn't catch her.  The store had a policy of dropping large bills into a locked vault under the register, and the girl would drop a few $20's a day into the trash can which was right under the vault, then would take out the trash at the end of her shift and retrieve the money.  The camera could not catch here dropping the money into the trash.

    Good luck with it.

  3. surprise cash counts.

look at the rings...any thing unusual about one shift vs another..versus historical. (Rule out holidays, etc).

look for unusual amount of refunds, voids. etc.

  4. Perhaps, offering incentives to the other co-workers, so they can tell you who it is. I noticed that when you make the situation a legal one then people act differently. They are stealing from you, which is a crime. I am not telling you to call the cops, but just letting them know if these acts of crime persist, then you can threaten them with that idea. I am really sorry to hear this, it seems you can't trust anyone nowadays.

  5. not unless torture is allowed even that isn't perfect
