  1. Don't make the mistake of removing all the strings at one time. Remove one, then replace it.  Removing all the strings takes all of the tension off of the neck and when the strings are replaced, the neck is again under tension.  Overtime, this change in pressure can affect the guitar.

  2. First of all, many, perhaps the majority, of beginner guitarists use incorrect stringing technique. The trick is not to wind the string around the tuning shaft over and over - this leads to to slippage and your guitar can tend to go out of tune on an infuriatingly regular basis.

Some tuning heads have holes to pass the strings through, some have slots.

For tuning heads with holes, the idea is to loop the string back on itself so that end you have threaded through the hole is held against the tuning shaft by the tension of the string.

for electric guitars with a split tuning post such as a Strat or similar, you'll need to trim the string before correctly winding.

    Hope this helps!
