How do you change the type of file a video is?

i am trying to put videos on Windows movie maker but it keeps saying its the wrong type of file. (its a Realtime quick player file)

  2. Windows movie maker only supports mpg or avi extentions.

    The video files you have have if it's quick time as you say must have .mov extention, or .rmi extention.

    So you need a program called "converter" to change the file from .mov format to .avi format.
