  1. The first thing you have to do is find the flights you want to take on www.delta.com.  A list of flights is returned and you have the option to "View Seats" that are available.  It will show you the seats you're eligible for.  Once you go through the ticketing process, you can select specific seats on your flights.  If you can't reserve your seats online, you can always call reservations and have them do it for you.

Note that you may not be able select seats on codeshare flights (ie, flights operated by other carriers) and may have to call for seat assignments.

You can also check www.seatcounter.com by entering in the flight number, carrier, and date of travel.  This is most useful for those looking at upgrade possibilities.  That is, if you are eligible for an upgrade to the next higher class (business or first), you can see what kind of availability there is to guage your shot at an upgrade.

Sounds like the first suggestion I gave will be sufficient for you.
