How do you childproof stairs with no banisters?

I have stairs that have metal poles as handrails with no banisters. I am renting so do not want to spend a great deal of money installing banisters. Has anyone heard of a gate or has any good ideas?

Try putting a child gate around the whole bottom area of the stairs.

It's illegal not to have them if you're in the US... it won't pass a safety inspection without one. It's up to your landlord to put them in. If you don't want to approach it, then put a gate at the top and at the bottom.
