How do you choose items for an index and typologys in sociology?

i'm not even sure if the word typologys is the correct word. but, i'm wondering how you go about choosing items for an index and typlogys. i have a test tomorrow, and i can't find the answers anywhere! if anyone has an answer, please let me know asap!

index comprise words phrases  that will lead on to further discussions.  hence when typing the essay / thesis, we jot down the terms used in our writings and keep it separate from the main body.  as the main body finishes, we add in the page number that it appears.  

typology - is it glossary? - definition of words/phrases that is not usu heard

or bibliography? - books used for the thesis
