Question:

How do you cite a quote from the play, The Glass Menagerie, within an essay using MLA format?

i don't understand how to do this because when citing a play you need to know the line numbers, but in The Glass Menagerie there are no line numbers. (this is why i'm confused. thanks

  1. Assuming that you provide a complete reference in your "Works Cited" section, MLA format distinguishes between in-text citation from prose plays (i.e., plays without line numbers) and in-text citation for verse plays (i.e., plays with line numbers).

    When quoting prose plays (plays without line numbers) provide not less than the page number and the act number.  Place a semicolon between the page number(s) and act number.  If you are able to add a scene number, do so after the act number.  Separate the act number from the scene number with a comma.  

    I shall not provide here the differences in MLA formatting of an in-text quotation of less than four lines or more than four lines; nor the differences in format when you use an introductory signal phrase or lead-in.  Those topics and others are covered at the following sites:
