  1. It varies a bit by discipline and by the regulations from the journal editors.   In general, you cite the authors first, followed by the journal (usually in italics) and it's volume number (usually in bold) then the page number and the year in parenthesis.

    If you're not sure, look in the submissions information of the journal in which you wish to publish


  2. It varies a bit by where you are submitting the paper. Look at one of the papers in that journal or read their instructions to contributors. If this is for a school assignment, follow the outline used by one of the journals you are citing. As a general rule, I place the author's name and the year of publication in parentheses within the text (Jones, 1994) and use the following in the Literature Cited section.

    Jones, R. A., 1994. Citing journal articles. Jour. Irreproducible Results, 56:123-126.

    The journal name gets set in italics. The volume number may or may not be in boldface depending on the journal's style.
