How do you clamp wood at a 45 degree angle?

I'm building cat perches inside of my screened porch. I want to come off of a stud at 45 degrees, then another 45 degree riser. But how do I clamp that 45 degree joint?

  1. You need to make a jig to "fill in" the angle and make it 90 degrees so you can clamp it all together OR just use long screws in conjunction with glue.

  2. While # 3 offers an extremely valid suggestion in a CORNER CLAMP, so often used in frame making, it seems unlikely it would work in this case.

      # 2 offers a suggestion I use, but in your case since it isn't two flat pieces of stock butting at a 45, you may have to cut another at a 45, with a surface perpendicular to the stud, forming a square to clamp to.

What I'm more curious about in trying to visualize this with no image, is why the need to clamp? Couldn't you use a perch piece large enough to cut a "birds mouth", allowing two surfaces to connect with the Stud, then angle brackets under for support and attach points, OR make a cut that allows long drywall screws?  I have built more than one cat tree, and at a weight of sometimes 10 pounds, I'd add angle brackets always for stability.

    Just my two "sense"

  3. This may sound obvious, but you use an 'angle clamp' like this one...

  4. If I understand your problem, this:

If you don't want to spend the money for a one-time tool, you can fashion the same thing out of some scraps of plywood.  Drill 1" holes for the clamps to fit into.

  5. place a clamp at lower end of ramp on the stud ,the ramp wont go any where..
