Question:

How do you clean a curved barbell belly button ring?

I just got my belly button pierced and I have a curved barbell. My friend recently told me that it was a bad idea to get that because it is hard to clean. However I also heard that a curved one was better because it allowed more ventilation. The ring I have in basically just fits and moves up and down a little. I've been cleaning with dial soap and put neosporn on it. Am I fine or should I do more?

  1. I have the exact same as you, only mine seems to be a bit longer than what you're describing. As long as you clean it everyday, twice a day, it should be fine. If it looks like it's getting irritated/red, use a more harsh soap that will do a better job of cleaning it (mild anti-bacterial soap). It should be fine.

  2. DO NOT PUT NEOSPORIN ON IT...it will infect it...thats the worst thing you can do for it!!!

Either buy non-iodized sea salt and mix it with water and clean it or buy Bactrim and just spray it on it during the shower, you can also rub this on it during the day...

Keep your hands off as much as possible, but you should move it up and down every now and then just so the ring doesn't get stuck (kind of scabs a lil from the new piercing)...

Belly piercings are one of the few that "never actually heal..."  so neosporin is BAD!    STOP ASAP!

  3. A curved barbell is the best thing to put wen u first pierce your belly and that's what most tattoo shops put when they pierce it, when you clean the piercing you can twist the barbell around to clean it and it makes it much easier, also if they had pierced it and put a regular belly ring it would be worse because it gets really sensitive and a regular belly ring has a higher chance of getting pulled.

Clean it with Dial Antibacterial soap (not scented) And also do sea salt soaks. to do the sea salt soak get 1/4 tablespoon of non-iodized sea salt and mix it in warm water and cleans the belly ring with that. You can also buy some H2ocean at hot topic or a tattoo shop and its the same as a sea salt soak, its just already made for you.

DO NOT use neosporin to clean your piercing, in the back of it it says do not use on puncture wounds, and thats exactly what a piercing is.

    I hope this helps. :)

  4. Actually....in my tattoo shop we recommend the salt water treatment. First, to clean the barbell, drop it in a shot glass filled with peroxide. This removes dead skin and scabs, dirt, oil, ect.

Next, take it out with tweezers and drop it in a solution made of water & soap (Provon is the soap I strongly recommend since it is Medical soap...you can get it pretty much anywhere). Rinse (never actually touching it until its rinsed...and make sure your hands are CLEAN) and THEN put it back in your belly button.

After its in, fill the shot glass halfway with saltwater (use sea salt & distilled water) and press it to your belly button (this also works for other piercings), form a seal while soaking your piercing, and hold it there for about 3-5 minutes. This will insure the barbell stays clean longer than just regular cleanings.

I hope this helped you. Your piercing will look better and won't "grow out".

  5. Well, it's been a couple years since I've had my pierced, but I kinda remember how to do it. Just get a Q-tip and dip it in Dial soap and water, and clean with the Q-tip. It's more sterile than using your fingers.

I've also heard that cleaning with sea salt is good! Might want to look into that.

The place where you got it pierced at should be able to answer any questions you have. Just give them a call!

  6. don't over clean it. twice a day for six weeks after its pierced i think is what they say in the piercing places and stuff.after six weeks i reckon just once a day should do. when cleaning, wash and disinfect your hands and make sure you move the bar up and down and twist it around so it doesn't get stuck and so the cleaning stuff (salt water is best) gets in the hole and flushes all the baddies out.
