How do you clean an old stained couch.?

I just got a couch that was kinda white and it has some pet stains and just usage stains on it and i was wondering what the best way to clean the cushions is. can i take the foam out and wash them and if i do that will the foam fit back in because i tried taking foam out and it was in there really really good so i am afraid to take off and wash. I know i can get a steam cleaner but is there another way to get out old stains.

If the cushions have a zipper then remove the cover and wash them in cold water and air dry them otherwise they might shrink , while you are doing this check the foam as well it might have absorbed the stain and odour as well if it's really bad , go to an upholsphery place with the old foam and you can have them cut a new one for you , but it's rather expensive , or you could go to a fabric store and get new foam , buy your self a slip cover to protect  the couch ,they are easier to care for .

A professional cleaner is your best bet. But if the cushions have zippers on them, you should be able to take the foam out and wash the covers. You'll want to use a gentle cycle, since this is an old sofa.
