How do you clean out the screening tray in a dish washer?

My friend has a GE Nautilus (sp) dishwasher and was wondering how do you clean the screen out on the bottom? Do you have to unplug it before you take the top off to clean it out? It's not my dishwasher (I do mine by hand) so I was wondering.

Have this person read the manual that came with the dishwasher, it is full of advice like this.
