I mean, is there a path carved on the mountain that you have to follow? Or do you have to climb it vertically upwards rock by rock, the old-school way?

  1. Actually, it's more like ice-by-ice.  There are a couple different routes up the mountain, from different sides (in different countries).  Most people take the same route up, because there's a lot of work in establishing the route every year - laying down ladder bridges, stringing ropes, etc.

If you want to read a really good book on it, try 'Into Thin Air' by John Krakaur.  It's fantastic - I'm usually not into mountaineering, but this book was incredible.

  2. Up is the general direction.
