How do you coax a porcupine out of a tree?

There's this big evergreen outside my house and we looked up and saw a porcupine in it!!! I live in Colorado Spring btw. So I'd like to know if there's a safe way to get it to come out of the tree without being scared so maybe we can feed it or something.

Thanks

  1. My two dogs got attacked by a porcupine and it was very painful for them.  We had to pull the quills out with pliers.  The dogs cried and whimpered a lot.  The quills are about 8 inches long and they were embedded into the dogs mouths and bodies about 5 inches deep.  It took over an hour to get all of the quills out.  There was bloody quills all over the place.  It's like getting stabbed deeply with an 8 inch long toothpick or bamboo shishkabob shewer.  You know, that's got to hurt a lot!

I wouldn't mess with a porcupine, if I were you.  If you spook the poor thing, he is going to defend himself.  And buddy, you're going to feel the pain!!!  Just leave him alone.  He'll come down when he gets good and ready.

  2. We in Alaska usually use a shotgun to coax them down, works pretty well to unless they get stuck on their way down. Fortunaly if you have properly used the shotgun when they get stuck you can simply climb up and grab them. They are always EXTREMELY passive and gentle when i do it and i have no worries of ever getting stabbed with their quills. Once you have them down you can set them loose if you want too, but i find that they are so sleepy they just lay there, often not moving. I know they are sleeping because when i come out the next day i usually see a raven giving them little goodnight kisses over and over again :)

  3. They like salt,  and apples,  and chewing on the out-house hole.

They like gnawing on sea shells, and fresh antler sheds too..  i think they get some calciumm from them, or some other mineral.

They like secluded places when they aren't in a tree..places like crevasses, or under big rocks, caves, thick brush,.. that sort of place.

They like fluffing up there guard hairs and quills and sun bathing in mornings and chilly afternoons when they are feeling secure and safe.

They like hanging out in a tree and observing activity under there perch.. They are great audience members, a bit lethargic perhaps, but attentive.

I doubt if you could intice one out of it's tree, tho... they arent exactly gragarious, or social, or congragative, for the most part.

As adults, they will pair up and keep each other company for periods of time, but they arent monogomus.

I think they are one of the few animals that enjoy recreational s*x, but ...  i dont KNOW that.

They are good neighbors, if you acept them and there apitite as they are.

When out-houses were the norm, it payed to keep the pit deep, and the 'pile' scattered around, or you could get an unexpected rear end full of quills useing it in the dark.

  4. Milk or some kind of food that will give off a smell at all.

  5. Leave it alone! It will come down when it feels safe.

  6. Don't.

He'll come down on his own. Porcupines are good tree climbers.

Besides, if you upset him, they will fling quills at you

If he won't come down for over a day, call animal control
