It isn't lame.  It's giving you freedom to choose whatever subject interests you most. e.g.-

What is this assignment about? It's about why I love my pet dog.

And why shouldn't gym teachers be allowed to give homework.  To a lot of teachers, teaching "something" is more important than "what subject" they choose to teach.  If ANY responsible teacher feels that your education needs a bit more practice in a certain area, then it's appropriate for them to try to improve your education first, and worry about your feelings of injustice later.

You should consider how much homework you get, not who gives it to you.

Maybe they want you to make up your own topic to do an essay on.. probably about sport... maybe do a sport you like or the sport you are doing at the moment in gym, or text one of your friends that is in that class and ask them what they are doing for it.
