the reason I ask this is not because im clueless, i know about WinRaR and Winzip - however, when I try to compress say, files that are 50-200 mb in size, the compression is almost neglible.

i.e recently i compressed a 192mb file and the end result was a 184mb file. hmm thats SO helplful. Not.

So what am i doing wrong ? or

  1. Well, some files can be compressed more than others. Text files can be compressed threefold, but movies and pictures barely compress. This is due to entropy in the files specific to their data. Anyway, you can get slightly better compression with a better algorithm. Try 7zip, it's free and has a very powerful native compression. You might shave a couple percent off that file. Also, do not compress any files twice. It will do nothing.
