How do you confront someone at work with bad odor?

someone i work with is not the freshest and everyone knows how do we confront the situation

If it really is that bad, then go to the HR dept and let then handle it.  But, just remember that you are making this a 'public' complaint so be careful before going forward.  I mean, if it is truely that bad, then yes -- speak with HR.  If not, then leave her/him alone.

just do it privately and have a friend do it!

just tell them how others have came to you with complaints about body oder.. ask if there is any medicale reasons or if they need any help1

Start up a conversation about scents that you like to wear and ask that person what they like.

This person may not be aware of the issue,or maybe they are and don't care.

Among the people you work with, get the bravest person, and the most diplomatic person to go and confront the fellow worker. Come up with a tactful, and respectful way to tell them without offending them. There's really no easy way to do it than to just come out with it. Use a nice tone that is not at all condescending, and politely and quietly pull them aside. I would try to make it as quick and snappy as possible, so it doesn't seem like your giving them a long lecture about their bad hygiene.

They may have a medical  problem.  I would gently talk to them alone.  Dont discuss it with everyone else afterward.  Keep it between the two of you.

Sometimes you have to grin and bear it. We had someone like that at my old job. No matter what they tried she would never do it. It was really horrible.

I think you should speak privately with your supervisor and explain that several of you are starting to complain.  HR will probably be brought in to handle it discreetly.
