from your circuit breaker box (or fuse box), there must be two different wires coming in that are 110 volts each, but out of phase.

each can provide 110 v 'hot' when connected to a circuit completed to ground.

when they are 'out of phase' that means one is 'pushing' while the other is 'pulling'

a 220v connection always has three prongs. one each of a hot 110v and the 3rd is ground.

There are a dozen ways to connect types of 220, and trusting the wire colors to be correct has killed a lot of people. Don't try if you aren't qualified.
