How do you connect a audio cable with speakers to a television without muting the television speakers?

i think its cuz i plug it into the headphones jack but when i plug it into the audio L/R do sound cuz outta the audio (i use hdmi cable to plug my dvd)

You would run it through a receiver.  I believe that is what you are trying to do.  You want the tv speakers and the seperate speakers to run at the same time, right?  Then you would need a reciever.  You can get them pretty cheap from Radioshack.  Don't let them talk you into the whole entertainment system since you already have the speakers.  You can always upgrade later =)
