How do you connect a switch to an outlet?

so i used to have my light switch connect to an outlet that powered my lamp. for some reason now when i turn on the light switch it turns on and off my computer. this is starting to become somewhat of a hassle so i would like to know if anyone knows how to reroute it back to my lamp outlet. any help is appreciated thank you.

Hi there,

I doubt the wiring magically rewired itself. More than likely you have plugged in the computer to another outlet that runs to the wall switch. A lot of times even only 1 of the 2 receptacles per unit is tapped into the wall switch, try plugging the computer into the other outlet.

If the power comes into the switch box and goes out to the receptacle, you can have it either switched or not switched. To do away with it being switched, just remove the 2 wires on the switch and use a wire nut and join these 2 wires together. The switch will no longer do anything.

If you have always had your computer and lamp plugged into this outlet, just switch top and bottom and see if that fixes your "problem."  Most switched outlets only turn off one of the two outlets in the fixture.  OR simply swap where your lamp and computer are plugged in.
