Question:

How do you construct a large retaining wall?

I have a driveway that is supported by railroad ties that over time have shifted and caused the driveway to crack and shift ( A LOT ).. Back of driveway is a 8ft drop off straight down to back yard. I have to build a 8-9ft high by about 35ft long retaining wall. The top of the wall would be the end of the driveway where I will have to re pour concrete or ashphault. Is versa lok suitable for something like this? Should I remove the existing concrete before I build the wall and start from scratch or just build up around it and fill in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  1. A huge job for the diy'er! I admire your willingness to take this on but it's too much. You also should have a fence on top of your (new) wall so as not to drive or fall off. Your new wall should not be wood given it's short life span. I'd start by approaching a structural engineer to prepare a plan. You very well might need a permit too from your local building department - I'd ask first.  Your DIY part might come in if a contractor is willing to work with you as spelled out in the reponsiblities of the contract/ scope of work.

  2. Hi Don S.

I would look for a structural engineer in you area that has  expertise in  constructing large retaining walls he or she should also have local knowledge on bylaws and permits required to handle this sort or operation.

Good references from other customers is always a good idea...

Just to be on the safe side..

  3. I had the very same problem....tried to fix it myself....DISASTER!  I suggest, that if you don't have the forms (steel templates) or the experience, hire someone to "get it done"!  Save yourself the heartache and expense!

PS.  I know this did not answer your question, sorry.  Still feeling the sting of defeat by concrete!
