  1. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

Once it's on your computer use your editing/burning software to edit and burn

  2. If it's a one-shot deal, you can pay a service about $30-50 to do that, or can ask a friend.

To do it yourself, first you need to get the video into a computer.  If the camera is 8mm or Hi8, you will need to get a video transfer device.  If the camera is mini-DV, then you can transfer to the computer via a firewire cable.

You need about 20 GB of disk space per hour of video.

You then need video authoring software such as Pinnacle Express or Ulead Video Studio.  These programs can be found on eBay for $5 or $10.  You don't need to have the latest version.

Finally, you need to have a DVD burner in your computer.

  3. You may use the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.

It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.

There is the free download link:

  4. There are many different products that allow you to do this but one I would really recommend (as I have one myself) is a Dazzle DVC 80, or the latest version being Dazzle DVD Recorer

Heres a link to it on Amazon so that you know what it looks like, but its dead easy to use and gets the job done!

    Hope this helps!!
