Question:

How do you cool an apartment without a window unit option?

We have a brick westward facing apartment and the windows are painted shut or are not designed to open. We are baking here in this "brick oven" and need some ideas as to how to cool this place down. We have a couple fans that run almost all of the time and we open the front door with the screen as soon as the sun goes behind the hill. Any more ideas?

  1. My husband does this and I don't actually agree with it, but I must say it helps.  He turns the shower on cold and let's it run for the whole day.  It mostly works around the bathroom area not throughout the entire apt.  (We don't have to pay for our water bill, which is a plus).  I bought an ac shortly after, so we don't do it anymore, but it was a good trick.

    There are also free standing ac units at target.

  2. Get those damned windows open.

  3. there are types of air conditioning systems, that don't require a window, i'm not sure what it is called, but ther is a unit that is about two feet tall, and very thin, it oscolates and cools the room very well. i will answer again when i find the actual product name

  4. Get yourself a portable evaporative air conditioner.

    There are a bunch of them, and they're attractive, portable, and most of them are energy efficient.

    I found some on Amazon.com here;

  5. Get a portable air conditioner.

    Here is what Wal-Mart has:

    They aren't cheap & you can probably find cheaper by typing portable air conditioner in your search engine.

  6. try a bowl of Ice water and set it behind your fan...causes the fan to pick up the cold air and move it around.

    Good Luck.

  7. I had the same problem when I was living in my condo.  I went out and bought a huge fan and that did the trick
