Question:

How do you count cards with multiple decks? (hi-low)?

It says you're supposed to divide the running count by the number of decks still in play. But nowhere does it say HOW to figure out how many decks are still in play in for example a six-deck shoe? I mean, you can't be actually counting the quantity of cards coming out of the shoe right? cause that's ridiculous and requires photographic memory or a computer.

  1. it requires a photographic memory, or very high intelligence.

the people who count cards have a specific talent that allows them to do this. no kid off the street is going to be able to do that.

  2. its simple math

Cards can be +1, 0 or -1 to the count

    Two - Six = +1

    Seven - Nine = 0

    Ten - Ace = -1

When the count is high, thats when you play because its a high possibility for a bomb hand

  3. You aren't counting the cards that are out, you are just looking at the deck and approximating.  If you read the book you'll see the guys were amazingly good at estimating # of cards in a stack.  Many of them could cut at *exactly* 52 cards.  You just train your eye to know what 2/3/4/5 decks looks like.

  4. You need to estimate the remaining decks in the shoe.  You do that by estimating the number of decks in the discard pile.  Then you subtract that number from the total number of decks in the shoe when shuffled.  You divide your running count by that to get a true count.

Sound like too much math to be doing quickly in your head in a noisy casino?  That's why recommend using an unbalanced system.

I personally think the KO Count is the best beginning system.  It's an unbalanced count, meaning you don't need to convert the running count into the true count.  That makes counting easier, and a basic count that is correct is better than an advanced count that is wrong.

  6. Cards that have been played are put in a "pick-up shoe" which sits on the table. You can look at the shoe and estimate how many decks are in it. So if there are about two decks in the pick-up shoe there are about four decks remaining in play.

Your count will not be exact, but it will be close. If you tried to count the cards dealt at the same time you were trying to keep a high-low count you would be almost certain to get your counts messed up.
