How do you counter a chargeback done through paypal?

There's no doubt that many scammers out there make a living ripping people off through virtual trades. One of the most common scams is a chargeback through paypal. This is when a buyer tells their credit card company to cancel and refund a payment that was already made, claiming someone stole their card and bought something, or that the seller never sent them the item they purchased. But many "buyers" out there are not nearly as honost as they'd like you to believe. And to get some quick cash they'll buy an item from you, then do a chargeback to get however much they payed back.

So, my question is, if someone does a chargeback scam to you, through paypal, how can you counter it, especially if you're selling something that is not shipped (an account for a game for example)

  1. You would have to prove to the Credit Card company that you did indeed send the item.  In this case, I would try to give them evidence that you sent the account information, and that it is now in the other person's control.  If you cant, not only will the buyer get their money back, but you will be charged $10 or $15 for a chargeback fee.

Sorry, but as an honest buyer, the chargeback is extremely important to me, there are too many shady sellers out there, Ive had to use it a few times, one in particular was for a computer I purchased for over $1000 that the buyer never sent.  The stupid Paypal complaint just came back as "we couldnt get any money back for you", but the chargeback got me back every red cent.

  2. Any one buyer could get away with that maybe twice, but no one makes a career out of chargebacks.  You're being paranoid.

The best way to avoid chargebacks is to communicate with your buyers.  More than half of all sellers (I'd say 95% of PowerSellers) don't answer their email from buyers.  Ever.  Then they wonder why their buyers issue chargebacks.
