How do you counteract a bad reputation cuased by gossip

i have this horrible reputation caused by gossip, It seems everybody is afraid to talk to me, they think Im this sad person, or a psycho of somesort, I lied to this one guy I used to know becuase he caught me off guard and asked me what i was doing, I told him i was doing this job i used to do but I was really unemployed, he caught me in a lie, i didn't feel like explaining why I couldn't work, to make a long story short he painted a sad story of me to everyone and the rest was history
