There are different biomass that can be use as fuel. Grain feedstocks can be used to produce ethanol such as corn.

The ethanol is produce from corn by converting the starchy content of the feedstock into sugar which is then fermented using yeast and other ethanol producing microorganism to produce ethanol and other side products. the ethanol is then purified. the ethanol produce can be used as gasoline blends for engines. if 100% ethanol is desired as fuel engine modification is needed.

seeds can be a good source of oil which can be reacted by transesterification and produce fatty acid methyl ester which is identified to have similar characteristics to that of a diesel. this Fatty acid methyl ester is blended to diesel which can be used in diesel engines. again, pure fatty acid methyl ester can be used as fuel with engine modification.

the biomass fuel can even be created with the vegetable waste... just dumping them under anaerobic condition for 2 weeeks will produce the required amount of methane and ethane... it can be transferred through pipeline to your kitchen and can be used directly...

Bio mass is ANY biological matter. Any form of vegetation or any animal or any animal waste.

To create it all you need is basic gardening (or aquaculture) skills sunlight and nutrients

There are many ways of using biomass. Burning it is probably the most common.

Allowing in to rot (composting) produces methane and heat both can be used as fuel. Once composted the nutrient rich waste can be used as a plant fuel.

Ethanol can be distilled from most types of bio mass.(some are better than others).  Ethanol can be used as a substitute for gasoline but requires some engine modifications. (E100 has been used in Brazil for many years)

Oils and fats can be treated and filtered for straight vegetable oil fuel or mixed with lye and methanol to produce bio diesel. Good quality bio diesel is a direct substitute for diesel in most cases.
