How do you currently manage a travelling lifestyle?

I'm specifically wondering how you afford it? Do you work in foreign countries for as long as it takes to hop to the next one? Or do you spend a few months at home working random jobs to make money and then go away for another few months?

I'm trying to figure out the logistics of that lifestyle, as it baffles me since it can be so expensive. What do you do when you're broke and back home?

Gah! So many questions.

  1. I work in Italy and travel on the weekends and holidays. The trains here aren't too bad, and there are still many budget airlines. The prices are much higher than last year, so it's becoming more difficult to get around as often as I'd like, but it's not impossible yet.

  2. I looked into this a few years ago.  Never did it, but almost did.  Try these books to learn how it's done:

The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World (Practical Nomad)  by Edward Hasbrouck

Globetrotter Dogma: 100 Canons for Escaping the Rat Race and Exploring the World  by Bruce Northam

Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel  by Rolf Potts

Go to Amazon and look for any of these and you'll find a cache of some great resources.  People really do this!  So cool....(sigh)
