Question:

How do you cut a guinea pig's toenails?

We adopted a guinea pig from a friend of mine. I've read that their nails should be cut regularly, and his obviously have not. I'm a little afraid to do this, for fear of cutting into the quick. Should I attempt this myself or take him to an animal groomer and have them do it for me the first time? If it is suggested I do this myself, what is the best way to go about it? Should I have someone else hold him while I cut?

  1. there are tips here http://www.guinealynx.info/nails.html

  2. Unless your guinea pig is terrified and struggling to get away from you you should be able to cut his nails and hold him at the same time.

If he has clear nails you should be able to see the blood under the tonail- indicating where you should not cut.

If he has dark nails, use your normal nail clippers and clip off the end- dont cut too much just incase.

You should have some cornflour on standby to clot the blood if you do cut too far.

It's pretty easy to do- but if you are really unsure you should ask somebody to show you- a vet, pet store attendant- or a guinea pig owner who has done it before. good luck
