How do you cut detailed stuff inside a picture?

I am trying to cup a tree that I printed out to go on a poster, but I need to cup some of the white parts in the tree and my scissors are too big to do that. How do I cut the little white details out?

Use a scalpel and a cutting mat

1. Ruler and a cutter knife;

Or,

2. Find a needle and a sponge, put the picture over the sponge and make little holes around the detail you want to remove.

I used to "cut and paste" when the cutting was done with a blade and the past was done with a pot of rubber cement.
