1. First cut the pattern pieces apart and according to your size (most patterns come in multiple sizing).

Second, lay the pieces out according to the layout provided in the pattern envelope. If you have a "napped" fabric, be sure to lay the pieces in the same direction or you will have two different shades of fabric in the completed garment. "Napped" fabric examples are corduroy, velvet, and velveteen. Be sure to purchase extra fabric if it is of the napped kind.

Third, you can either pin the pieces to the fabric or use fabric weights...depending on the thickness of your fabric and the type of fabric. I usually pin mine unless it is quite heavy (like wide wale corduroy). If you intend to use the pattern over several times, pinning it will make the tissue paper fall apart after a few times. Copying the pattern onto heavier paper will help eliminate this. Using pattern weights saves the pieces. I take regular brown wrapping paper to transfer my favorite pattern pieces and use the brown pattern. If the fabric is heavy, I'll also trace the pattern outline onto the fabric with non-oily chalk.

If the pattern piece calls for "Lay on fold of fabric" be sure to put it on the fold. When you gain more confidence, you can even take pieces that only require "cut one of fabric", fold it in half, and lay it on the fold. This method sometimes makes it possible to use even more of the fabric that you might have otherwise thrown away. Over the years, I have discovered that most pattern envelopes require purchasing more fabric than needed and I usually purchase less than what is on the envelope. However, this has taken years of practice to be able to ascertain how much fabric is actually needed.

After you have cut out all your pieces, be sure to keep the pattern pieces with the fabric pieces as you will need to refer to them during construction. Over the years, I have discovered that the instructions on the instruction sheet and on the pattern pieces have become less informative than in the past. This is unfortunate as most new sewers may become frustrated trying to figure out what the instructions and pictures are really trying to convey. I would be happy to help with any questions you may have during construction of your garment.

Happy sewing! And welcome to this wonderful craft. You will find that you can construct clothing no one else has and put your own unique signature on your garments.

  2. Hi, You have to first cut out the individual pieces of the pattern out of the paper to your required size. You then lay those pices of paper on top of the material - make sure you align the arrows with the grain of the material.

Then you pin the paper down and then cut around the paper pieces. make sure you read the pattern instructions as you may need two or more of some things. Also you may have to lay the paper on a fold of the fabric.

    Hope this helps.
