How do you cut old tires in half?

I have around 10 old tires that I need to cut into half to make a horse jump out of but try to cut them with a sawzall but the blade did not even touch it. I am afraid to use a chain saw because of the steel belted radials will dull the blade. Does anyone have suggestions?

  1. When we did tire for ship bumpers a chain saw with a carbide tipped chain was used. Even then the the belts are a mess.  A torch to cut the steel may help.

  2. Take them to a machine shop. They have a band saw that will cut those tires in a few minutes. It shouldn't cost much either.

  3. hacksaw is slow, but will do the job

could be u were using the wrong blade in the sawzall

  4. there are very few things that I have seen a sawsaz NOT be able to cut through and they are usually thick and heat treated. use a long blade, high speed, and light pressure. I would NOT recommend using a circular saw with a wood blade, but mount an abrasive disk in it and that would work in place of a grinder...

  5. A grinder works best.

  6. Try a circular saw. I've found those cut pretty good.

  7. you can use a grinder, i do

  8. If a large enough freezer is available, freeze 'em' first.

    Then try the 'sawzall'.

  9. A saber saw with a hacksaw blade should do.  But the Sawzall should have done also; was it equipped with a hacksaw blade?
