How do you cut plastic? Like those diamond necklaces (made of plastic of course) that "scene" people wear.

I'm talking about the handcrafted necklaces people make & sell. How do you make them?

  1. Do you have a picture of what you are talking about?? Cut plastic?? Diamond?? Sorry don't understand, if you can find a pic link I can let you know how.

AHHH...now I understand....actually this is VERY easy. The makers do not actually cut the plastic. You buy the shapes you want like a bat or diamond, they are large plastic "charms" you will find a heap of like products listed on Ebay if you search for EMO or Kitch Charms..... or Gumball purhaps. I searched for "plastic diamond" and some came up...that was UK.

Then all you do is buy a selection of Swarovski flat backed crystals and glue them on! Simple or what!! Have a go, if they are really popular as you say then make a few up and try to sell them on Ebay first and see how you go! But a word or warning about Ebay...people are out to bag a bargain and don't want to pay too much.

Hope this helps, have a lovely day....

My jewellery is more traditional: www.mystiquejewellery.com if you are interested.

  2. You can always make your own background shapes too instead of buying pre-cut plastic shapes.

You can cut shapes from various types of cardstock or stiffer board, or from stencil plastic, etc.

But various clays would probably be easier, and "polymer clays" actually are real plastic.

Polymer clay can be rolled into sheets, then cut into shapes with cutters of all sizes and types (cookie cutters, canape or veg. cutters, etc., or geometric pattern cutters you can buy) or they can be cut freehand (or you can make cutters yourself).

After the shapes are baked to harden, they can be left as is, or be given a clear gloss finish (even with glitter inside the finish), or have metallic powders/paints/etc. added to the surface, etc... and the clay itself can be marbled or have patterns in it, etc.)

After that, just glue on the crystals and or any other embellishments you want .

Or, if the clay is thick enough and the embellishments can take the low heat required to cure polymer clay, you can just push them into the clay and bake all together (though if there isn't enough clay to come up around the edges even a tiny bit, it can be a good idea to use a "glue" too--a liquid polymer clay for example, like Translucent Liquid Sculpey or FimoDecorating Gel, etc, or other things).

If you want more info about polymer clay, check out my online polymer clay "encyclopedia":
