How do you cut (possibly tempered) glass?

I have a big table top which I would like to cut myself. How do I tell if it is tempered glass and can such glass be cut??? If so, what would be the best way to cut it? Any special tool I can readily buy? I would say it is a good 1/3" if not thicker.

Thanks!

  1. If it is a table top it has to be tempered. I think I would find a glass place and ask them how to cut it, or ask if they could.

  2. you cant cut temperd glass if you try it will shatter

it would be tempered as a table top

if you look round the edge you will find little dents in the glass at one spot  this shows its tempered

  3. To tell if you have tempered glass you can look in one of the corners and there might be a stamp in the glass that says "Tempered" but sometimes it might not be marked. Not all glass on a table is tempered. If the table is like a wrought iron one and the glass just sits on the metal frame it just might be 3/8" Plate. It doesnt have to be tempered. If it is glass that just sits on a wooden table it might not be tempered. Your best bet is to take it to a professional and have them look at it. If you have never cut glass before then dont take chances. If you cut the glass how will you seam the raw edge of the glass thas is left after you cut it. If it is tempered it can NOT be cut. It will explode into a billion pieces.

With tempered glass the edge is the weekest point. So alot of tables arent tempered because if something hits the edge of it, it will break.

So my advice is to take it to a professional. If it is not tempered and they can cut it it shouldnt cost more than a few dollars. At least that is what it would be through us.

  4. you cant cut tempered glass ..even with a diamond !

  5. It is almost certainly heat treated to be toughened: it would be dangerous otherwise, as it would crack or collapse.

You cannot cut toughened glass - it will simply shatter.
