How do you decide between a Standard or Automatic car?

I had just purchased a 2009 mustang V6 and I can't decide on standard or automatic. I am afraid that I will enjoy the car in standard for the first little while but in a year or two I will regret it. I am having a really hard time deciding what to do, I have until Saturday to make up my mind.

any suggestions?

  1. Definitely go with standard. After you've been driving standard for a while, you'll grow to hate automatic. Also, you'll get better gas mileage.

  2. I've been driving for about 16 years now, and all but about 1 of them was on standard.  The only reason I switched was because my husband just couldn't pick up on how to drive my car, so we had to get an automatic.

Would I go back to standard?  In a heartbeat!  I, too, love to drive.  I like making the driving decisions, not the car making them for me.  I used to have an old VW Scirocco and, man, was she fun to drive!  She was kinda heavy, low to the ground and was incredibly responsive.  That was a great car as a standard transmission.  As an automatic, I don't think it would have been nearly as much fun.

I would go with the standard transmission.  Besides, it's a Mustang!  I don't think I could take an automatic transmission Mustang seriously.  Kinda like a Great Dane named something frilly like Fifi.  It just doesn't sound right.  Enjoy the new car!

  3. well manual is much more enjoying for the driver, it does take a little getting used to if you have never driven manual before, but it is more enjoyable, plus will have better performance, as well as control of the car, the one thing that you have going against you is that you are looking at a v6 mustang, why??? I don't know maybe you want the slightly better gas mileage, but you still have a v6 mustang which is not a real mustang, whats the point of owning a mustang if you only have the v6 version???? it does not offer nearly the enjoyment of the v8. You should of purchased another car if your looking for a sporty car with good gas mileage. automatic is better if you do alot of city driving though but manual is so much better once you get used to it.

  4. I like the answers above and add.... the automatic is usually an option with a higher purchase price/cost.

  5. Automatic --- My main deciding factor is that I live in Houston and traffic is horrible.

I don't want to have to continually have to be shifting and using the clutch.  You also have to worry about rolling into the car behind you, who is tailgating you when you are in bumper to bumper traffic, etc

Manual gets better gas mileage, but automatic is more convenient and less of a hassle.

  6. If you're a lazy person or know that you're going to have distractions while driving, if not now then maybe later, or if you're going to spend a long time driving then you should get an automatic. But if you like driving and enjoy feeling your car, or if you're just a car lover, then you should get a standard one.

  7. Well if its a daily driver that you use only to get to point A to Point B , get the automatic. However, if you are a car lover and drive your car just for the sake of driving, go with the Manual because after a year or two you will get bored with an automatic. But the ultimate question to ask yourself is Will it be a hassle shifting through the gears all of the time?
