  1. it's really up to you....it all depends of how do you like your music.....

  2. All bookshelf speakers have poor bass performance. They are small sized because they do not have a woofer. An external, self-powered subwoofer is required to hear all the sounds.

The lower number on the 'frequency' range for a speaker tells you that the sub must take over sounds at and below this number.

Example: bookshelf speaker says 200 hz - 20,000 hz

    Subwoofer says: 30 hz - 120 hz

This is a poor combo because the sub stops working at 120 hz and the bookshelf speakers start working at 200. You have a 'gap'.

  3. The human hearing frequency range is 20 hz to 20,000 hz, 20 Hz being the lowest we can hear and 20,000 as the upper limit. Technically speaking, a good speaker system can handle this frequency range with low noise and accurate sound (natural sounding, not the boomy and distorted mid bass you hear from those hip hop cars) that is close to what you hear when you are watching the musicians live.

To get to down to 20hz and very limited distortion, you need a good sub woofer. I have a Hsu Research sub , http://www.hsuresearch.com , that goes down to this level that I added to my tower speakers, even though they go down to around 35hz.

Most THX and home theater systems are set up with a powered sub woofer that covers say 25 hz to 80hz and they have bookshelf speakers that covers from 80hz to 20,000 hz. So for your comparison, you want to look at the specs to see if they run close to 20 hz to 20,000 hz. After that, the most important part is to go and listen to them and make sure that you like how they sound.
