If you are a black woman, do you think of yourself as black first and a woman second? Or the other way around?

As a sociologist I am very interested in the way people identify themselves.

Please tell me your reasons for choosing how you describe yoruself. Why do you give s*x or race/color more importance?

Thank you for your answers.

  1. I'm a white dude.

  2. i wouldn't use my color i would use my Region like this

Egyptian woman coz I'm very proud that I'm from place has thousands years of civilization and of course I'm proud of being a woman

  3. I would say I am a white guy so there both even

  4. I would descibe myself as a woman or female instead of white because im proud to be a woman and I dont really think race is important

  5. my ethnicity/heritage is very important to me.  so generally i describe that first.  in my opinion gender is pretty obvious in my case, so it's not really an issue.  i'm a half Greek and half Armenian woman.

  6. A white woman.  Easy as that.  ;-)

  7. My first identity will always be my origin in Europe, then as a woman. I am Caucasian.

  8. white woman

i describe myself as a woman first because i'm in the racial majority, so most of the time, my race doesn't even occur to me.  it doesn't make me distinctive.  that would probably change if i went to live somewhere where whites aren't in the majority.

  9. My name generally gives away my s*x but when I describe myself I usually say that I am a teacher. I don't really identify with a race. My father was Latino and my mother is American. So as a rule of thumb I guess Teacher, female then mixed ancestry.

  10. first by s*x

i do this i guess because race dont matter much to me cause im american and its almost like fir me the most common thing lol just because thats wat i am

sum ppl i guess could be dif unless they say like im a black woman at the age...

just because the race is the adjective in that instence

im a teen so race doesnt matter mcuh

i think teens are always having the oposit s*x on there mind so thats always the first thing they will i dentify

    im a white girl

  11. My description of me:

50 yo, sw grandmother of 2 and one on the way.

I live in rural america.  Everyone here knows almost everybody or is related to someone in town.

While my daughter was in school, I was called Bridget's mom.  Still to this day, there are people out there that still call me this and my daughter is married and has kids of her own.

Why do I state my age?  Why not?  I'm proud that I've made it this far by the grace of God.

Yes, I'm single.  I was married/divorced, but after 12 yrs. of being alone, I call that single.

As for why do I describe myself this way, because I work in the medical field and this is how we write our reports on our patients.  After many years it's hard to change.

  12. I always identify myself as a female first.

Technically, I'm black, but I dislike to associate myself the connotations/stereotypes that race embodies. I've found that if I start out telling people I'm black, they get the wrong idea about who I am. Especially when who I am has nothing to do with where I'm from.

It sucks that you don't get a say in your gender or your race, but I do get a say in how people perceive me: I'm a girl first.

    Good question!
