Question:

How do you detect natural gas leak?

This is probably a stupid question, but I've been an electric user all my life! I just moved to a house that uses natural gas for stove and water heater.

Does a Carbon Monoxide detector detect a slight natural gas leak? I ask because I was cleaning behind by range/oven, and I could smell a faint odor of what I think is natural gas. If there was a small small leak, would the carbon monoxide detector catch it?

  1. The 2 answers above are correct. Before calling gas company you might want to see if pilot lights  are all lit( if it has flame style pilot light). If a pilot light has blown out you will get a slight smell of gas because it is not being burned. If you have a newer style stove that clicks when you turn it on ( electronic ignition) then there won't be a standing pilot light and you probably have a gas leak.

  2. Not at all. If there is a question call your local gas company asap. Do not delay. Do not fool around with this.

  3. You need a professionals help. Call your utility co to see if they can help you diagnose and then you're gonna need a plumber. There are just some things homeowners should not mess with.

  4. No, Carbon Monoxide detector will not detect it.

    You could be in Danger.

If you feel you have to get a spray bottle with water and put a little liquid dish soap in it, shake it and start spraying the gas line and fitting.   You are looking to see if any bubble start growing or busting, this indicates a leak.

Best to call the gas company, alot will check it for free.

    Be Careful.

  5. if you have been a elec. appl. user, welcome to the world of gas.if you think you may have a leak, take a spray bottle and put alittle liq.detergent in it and fill the rest w/water,spray it on the fittings and gas line behind the stove,if you see bubbles, you have a leak,it could also be coming from the pilot light for the eyes or the oven, somtimes you get a faint smell of gas reguardless if there's a leak or not. but i don't know if a c.m.detector will detect gas, don't think so.....

  6. Quick answer no. You can smell gas because it smells bad. it is like that so that you know there is a leak. If you have a leak how come you are still alive after the explosion. That is what happens if there is a gas leak
