How do you determine if a reaction is an oxidation reduction reaction?

  1. If the reaction releases oxygen it is an oxidation reduction reaction.  


  2. First off, if it looks "funny."

    If you see something different from the usual neutralizations, gases, precipitates, then you should look for possible oxidation number changes. If you detect any thing unusual, start checking oxidation numbers on both sides.
