  1. The odds are determined by how much money is wagered on the horse.  The more money, the lower the odds, and vice versa.  The lower the odds, the less payout on a winning horse, and vice versa.

  2. Likesaid, 2-1 is better than 34-1. That means (2-1) One out of two people average is voting on that horse, or (34-1) one out of thirty four is voting on that horse. That is why so many longshots win the derby. I believe Street Sense was only the 51st favorite to win the derby. The Higher the odds, the better payout the money is. A trifecta is the best to get because it pays out more, but yet harder to get. Just because a horse's odds are better doesn't mean the horse is better or will run better. More like a popularity thing. If you bet and are real serious, you won't look at odds as much as w/p/s and times per furlongs run and breeder, trainer, (&) owner.

  3. I would look at its past races and see who it beat, then if they are in that race choose the one that won.  Go thru all of them and eleminate them like that.

  4. read the tote board

  5. Get a race program

Find out the Lap record for the track your at

Compare track records with The Horses (horses in the race)  record for that track

and look at the Jockey (experience), some jockeys seem to make certain horses run faster

  6. The odds on a horse is detemined by the amount of WIN money that is on them out of the entire win pool. The lower the odds the more money they have on them compared to the other horses.

  7. the lower the better like 2-1 as opposed to 50-1

  8. the best odds are always the longest odds on the board, they are also the ones that are least likely to win the race. i will give you a secret i have been using for years. never play a horse that odds are untrue....this is an example....you have a 10 horse field...so the true odds without money being wagered would be 10/1.....if you only played the horses that are 10/1 and under you will win 66% of your bets. if you have 6 horses then your true odds would be 6/1.....4 horses your odds would be 4/1.....don't be shut out or denied.
