  1. You could always buy CD/DVD shredders:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...

    or find cheaper ones..

  2. Get yourself a shredder that will shred Cds. DO not throw them in the fire, especially in a fire place.

For one, It is environmentally stupid and

Two, it will leave a thick residue and soot in your chimney. Which could potentially pose a fire hazard if done often enough.

  3. dont worry know ones going to be able to glue a million pieces together and actually retrieve anything we burn wood so i just throw them in the fire. My work place actually has a paper shredder with a slot that grinds cds into oblivion.

  4. Shredders are definitely the best approach if you can afford a good one. Here's a tip, though: you can recycle shredded paper, but not if it has big chunks of plastic in it from shredded discs. Bag the paper first, then shred and dump the discs. The basic truth: cutting discs up with scissors, even just repeatedly bending or heavily scoring the surfaces of the disc (say, 30 grit sandpaper or grinding it into a concrete sidewalk) will make them unreadable. So will heat, but I don't recommend the microwave (dangerous)or the fireplace (toxic). Gotta go cheap? Hit the garage sales and buy a set of old tin snips- better control, smaller blades, less chance of losing skin in the process, huge leverage (easy to cut with). Shredders are still your best bet. Check around to see if anyone you know has one. Ah, peace of mind....

  5. It's spelled scissors.

  6. Standard paper shredder like my paper documents go through.  Even if they can get the pieces, they're still too damaged for a machine to recover any data from them.  Same for old credit cards that I'm done with.

  7. I put it in the microwave for 2 seconds.  It shatters it.  Then I send it through a paper shredder that can shred CD's.  I'm paranoid though.

  8. On top of the CD there is the label which is the whole front side and after you get through that there is a smooth thin sticker which is the data itself so after you tear the actual data off there is no way to even open the disk. Even if you don't get all of the Sticker there is a high chance it will not work anyway.
