I have heard that you are not supposed to just throw them in the trash. Is that correct?

If so, how are you supposed to dispose of them?

  1. Many municipalities have a program to recycle used bulbs.  They were started for office buildings (the long ones have more mercury in them) but generally will accept others.

Call the people who handle your trash, and ask.  They'll know.

  2. Throw them in the recycle label trash can, for your state

  3. Call your solid waste director (with the City or County) and ask if they have a recycling program.  If not call the manufacturer and see if they will take them back.

If neither has anything to do with recycling it is important to let both know you expect something to be done in the near future (call your mayor/city councilman/countycommisioner) seeing as how many f these will soon be ready for disposal.

  4. Some stores, such as Lowe's, may accept them for recycling along with the store's own fluorescent tubes. Check the individual store; our local Home Depot is still in the throes of setting up the program.
